Refrigerator repair - Sears refrigerator

We have a maintenance agreement that provides for a free check up on our refrigerator once a year. We seldom call (if it ain't broke don't fix it). The fan has started to make a loud noise so we called. The phone rep tried to tell my wife that it would cost $279.00 for a trip charge if the tech came out and didn't find a problem. What kind of maintenance agreement is that?
